The History of The Carolina Forest Area

Carolina Forest was once part of a larger piece of land originally owned by George Buist, who called it Socastee Plantation. International Paper bought over 46,000 acres in 1937 from Buist. During World War II, International Paper allowed part of their land to be used by Conway Bombing and Gunnery Range. New residents may receive a note from the Federal Government about what to do if they happen to discover something from the Bombing Range days.

International Paper donated some of the land in 1960 for the site of Coastal Carolina University. They also sold some parcels of land including 125 acres to Horry County Schools and 350 acres for a residential golf community.

The master plan for Carolina Forest covers about 11,000 acres. When the building is complete the area could have 55,000 residents.

Presently there are apartments, condos, townhouses, and single family homes. Communities range from manufactured to million dollar custom homes. There are several gated communities and there is presently home sites available on the Intracoastal Waterway.

Shopping complexes and retail centers offer a wide variety for those in the area of Carolina Forest. For example grocery stores such as Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, Food Lion, and future construction of a Lowe's Food mean you'll be able to shop and compare to find your favorite.

Presently there are two elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology, and Coastal Carolina University located within the area of Carolina Forest.
