Sunset Beach - Bridge

Sunset Beach (Mainland and Island)
The beach is actually located on the island. To access the beach from the Sunset Beach mainland you must cross the Sunset Beach Bridge. Since the 1960s that was a single lane "swing bridge". A traffic light directed either the eastbound or westbound traffic to cross. If boats were traveling the Intracoastal Waterway all traffic waited while the bridge opened to let the boats pass. You had to remember you are in "beach mode", you are relaxed and enjoy watching the boats cruise on the water. The old Sunset Beach bridge will soon be a memory as the new concrete and steel bridge, which rises above the Intracoastal Waterway will allow boats to pass under, is scheduled to open in December 2010 but may open sooner.
The area has seen substantial growth in the past few years, but has retained the "beach mode" feel and attitude. The intersection of Hwy. 904 & Hwy. 179 has recently added a Live / Work development by Dock Street consisting of small row-type shops with living quarters above. (The developer also built the Dock Street section at Market Commons - Myrtle Beach.) In that same shopping complex on the back side of the Food Lion grocery store is a Deli with indoor and outdoor seating. The meals and baked goods are made on-site and I highly recommend this Deli. They also have internet connections available.
