You will see the word "Calabash"  even in the Myrtle Beach area since some restaurants prepare their seafood in the "Calabash" style.   Many people ask, myself included, "What is Calabash-style seafood?"  The answer is "Lightly battered and deep-fried seafood."  No special seasoning or secret recipe but the seafood is suppose to be fresh.  Myrtle Beach restaurants that say "Calabash" are promoting their own idea of the style according to actual residents of the town of Calabash, North Carolina.  

There is no beach in Calabash but there are beaches only minutes away.  Also North Myrtle Beach is approximately a 10 minute drive and Myrtle Beach approximately a 40 minute drive. 

There are less than 2,000 permanent residents in Calabash but the Myrtle Beach area boasts 1.4 million visitors annually and many of them find their way to Calabash.
